Gifted young student Kevin Roche picks up top awards 39th May 2002
Gorey Community School student Kevin Roche is a young man who has already learned that hard work and dedication allied with natural talent can lead to great rewards.
A gifted young artist and Second Year student, Kevin has just picked up two major prizes, with a monetary value of more than euro2,500 a Texaco Art Award, and the title of UTV Young Artist of the Year.
Kevin a student of Mr. Paul McCloskey had already been announced as All-Ireland winner in the 14-15 years age group of the Texaco competition before going to Dublin to collect his prize last week, and was looking forward to picking up the cheque for euro1,000 that came with the trophy.
While there though, he was also picked from the more than 60,000 entrants at all levels from the 32 counties to receive the prestigious overall award sponsored by UTV, who are joint sponsors of the Texaco Art Competition.
His prize includes a trophy and a stg £1,000 (approx £1,600) commission, which will hang in the UTV National Art collection when finished.
He becomes the first winner of this new award anywhere in Ireland.
Kevin, who is son of Mr and Mrs Pat and Cecily Roche, is already beginning work on his commission, and is looking forward to completing it over his Summer holidays from school.
