Pastoral Care

In a school of 1500 pupils a formal Pastoral Care system is essential. Of course, everyone in the school system has a responsibility in the area of pastoral care. All the adults in the school provide a model for the students of what it means to be responsible and caring adults. But, it is vital that every student has at least one teacher who will know him/her personally, who will monitor academic progress, behavior and generally keep an eye on him/her. This is the idea behind our Pastoral Care system.

Class Tutor

Each class group has a Class Tutor. This teacher teaches the class a subject and meets the class every day. The class tutor monitors attendance, checks absence notes, signs the student’s journal and deals with minor discipline issues.

Year Head

Each year group has a Year Head and Assistant Year Head. These teachers deal with serious discipline issues and work with the class tutors in monitoring the student’s overall progress.

The Year Head is the person whom a parent can contact with questions, worries or information about an individual student. The Year Head liaises with Principal, Deputy Principals, Counselors, Chaplain, Tutors, Teachers and Parents.

Personal Development

Junior students and Transition Year students have Personal Development classes. In these classes, the students get an opportunity to discuss issues relevant to their stage of development. Topics such as bullying, stress, study skills, relationships and sexuality are covered in this class. The Personal Development class is another strand in the Pastoral Care structure, because each student, at junior level, is known personally to one teacher.

Principal and Deputy Principals

The Principal and Deputy Principals have ultimate responsibility for the students. They deal with subject choice and other administrative issues. The Principal deals with the more serious discipline issues.
