Career Possibilities:

 Accounting is a dynamic and challenging career that can take you to the height of your abilities.
Accountancy is a recognised qualification that can be used abroad.
 Accountants can work in a wide variety of finance roles for many types of organisations, including
manufacturing companies, local and central government, the health service, banks and insurance
companies, actuarial studies, marketing and private accountancy firms. It would also be an
important subject choice for those thinking of starting their own business.
 Accountancy provides a valuable foundation for all business functions and many top executives
have an accountancy background. Most chief executive officers of public limited companies have
               some sort of accountancy qualification.
 Career pathways might include accountancy, actuarial studies, marketing, business or finance. It
would also be an important subject choice for those thinking of starting their own business.

        Additional Information

            • While the Junior Certificate Business Studies Course provides a foundation for Accounting, it is not
essential and it is possible to take it up at senior cycle.

            • The Accounting course is numerically based but theory and procedures are also covered.

            • The course offers a hard working student a real possibility of high grades.

            • Accounting is a business studies option with the Leaving Certificate Programme. It covers aspects
of business and social life which are not dealt with in any other subject in that programme.

            • It is concerned with the preparation, recording, extraction, presentation and analysis of financial
information for the purpose of making economic decisions.

            • Students will also study Management Accounting where they will learn how to analyse business
               costs and prepare budgets

Economics is a new subject which you may choose on entering Senior Cycle. It is a
business subject whereby you deal with the Economy in which all business units
operate or work. Eg: how are mobile phones priced? What influences the cost of
text messages? Who decides on the cost of match tickets, concert tickets, clothes,
shoes etc. Who decides on the level of wages and salaries?

Not having done Junior Certificate Business is NOT a disadvantage.

The course is divided into two sections:

            A. Micro-Economics – dealing with individual business units and structures.

            B. Macro-Economics – dealing with the economy regarding Inflation and Government Policy,
Employment and Job prospects, Rate of Inflation and the European Central Bank, Population and
the study of some famous Economists.

There is a big difference between Ordinary Level and Higher Level as outside reading is needed for the
Higher Level course. The course is quite short in comparison to the Business Course for the Leaving

All Business Courses have an economic content so having done economics in school will be an advantage.
Economics is useful for careers in: Banking, Insurance, Finance, General Business, Marketing and
        everyday life.
